Underwater

Under

I stopped to snap some photos down by the creek and was intrigued by the way the camera alternated between focusing on the reflections on the water surface and on the creek bottom.  What would happen, I wondered, if I snapped one photo of each view and then merged them together?

I never actually take just two shots for an idea like that.  Instead, I was nearing photo thirty when Lucy came wandering down the creek to see what all the fuss was about.  I guess I was done with that clear water....

Art is full of happy accidents.  I had planned to play with layers, using different levels of opacity to merge the two shots together.  But it turned out that my favorite shots weren't direct registers of each other, and when I lined them up, I liked the effect of having reflections at the top and the creek bottom below.  I played with the minnow a bit to repeat the hard rectangular line between the other two shots, erased a bit of the creek bottom image to let a few grass reflections shine through, and called it a day.  This is the first time I've ever been pleased with an extensively digitally manipulated image I made!
