Top Native American sites in the southeast and nearby

If you become interested in Native American archaeological sites, you'll soon discover that there are literally hundreds of them out there waiting to be explored.  The problem then becomes --- how do I narrow down my adventures to focus on the most intriguing mounds and other sites?

A Traveler's Guide to North American Landmarks by George Cantor is a good place to start.  You'll still have to do some weeding if you'd rather skip the battlefield markers and birthplaces of famous Native Americans, but the book divides sites by state, which should make it relatively easy to choose interesting sites near you.  This map shows the top sites I'd like to visit within an eight to ten hour drive from my home in southwest Virginia.  Hopefully the map will help you begin your own explorations.
