Spanish vocabulary for the ecotourist: Animals

Studying Spanish vocabularyNow that the Platiquemos Spanish CD has overhauled my pronunciation, I feel comfortable branching out and adding in some supplemental vocabulary.  After all, the chances of me using the Spanish words for elevator and cashier are relatively slim.  Instead, I want to know the words for bird and farm.

So I've put together a multi-part vocabulary list for the ecotourist, splitting it up into animals, plants, weather, the Una tortuga de piedralandscape, and archaeology.  I've also tweaked my tried and true method of memorizing vocabulary.  I still fold a sheet of notebook paper in half and write the Spanish on one side and the English on the other for easy drilling on the go, but now I also look up each word on Google Translate to check my pronunciation.

Here's this week's vocabulary list --- animals:

Una tela de aranala abeja n. bee
el águila n. f. eagle
el animal n. animal
la araña n. spider
el ave n. bird
la avispa n. wasp
el burro n. donkey
el caballo n. horse
el caracol n. snail
el cerdo n. pig
el cocodrilo n. crocodile
el conejo n. rabbit
la cucaracha n. cockroach
la gallina n. chicken (living)
el gato n. cat
Una mariposa en vivola hormiga n. ant
el insecto n. insect
el lagarto n. lizard (alligator in Mexico)
la lombriz n. (earth)worm
la mariposa n. butterfly
el mosquito n. mosquito
muerto adj. dead
el murciélago n. bat
el pájaro n. bird (generally small and flying)
el perro n. dog
el pez n. fish
el pollo n. chicken (meat)
el ratón n. mouse
reproducirse v. to breed
la serpiente n. snake
la tortuga n. turtle
la vaca n. cow
vivo adj. living, live, alive

In case you couldn't guess, my illustrative images are from last year's trip to Uxmal --- some unidentified wildlife that caught my fancy.  Next week (or whenever I feel confident on my animal vocabulary), I'll post some plant terms.

Learn a language, plant a garden, or do whatever floats your boat.  You'll have plenty of time once you quit your job with Microbusiness Independence.
