Cozumel port

Carnival cruise ships at CozumelLast year, our visit to Cozumel was anticlimactic.  We hadn't scheduled a tour, figuring we could just walk through an unsullied Mexican village, maybe look at some local wildlife.  But the ferry pier is right in the middle of the city, and you walk off the boat into masses of "handicrafts" (aka mass-produced items made in China and sold at a premium to tourists.)  Venders and taxi-drivers are calling to you constantly, and we even accidentally got roped into listening to half an hour of a time-share spiel before we realized what was going on.  The only good thing I can say about the city is that there are several internet cafes very close to the ship where you can check in on home without paying the cruise line's $7 per minute (more like $2 per half hour on shore) --- I've found that sating my worry about the farm once in the middle is enough to keep me happy on the entire cruise.

Me in front of the Mayan steam lodgeWith that not-so-great experience left from last year, we decided to book a tour.  I got to choose the nature-packed Coba adventure, so I let Mark choose our Cozumel activity off a list I'd compiled from careful browsing of the internet.  There are ziplines, ruins tours (but I've heard the ruin in Cozumel is very minimal, even though it was quite a holy site), some of the best snorkeling around, and a traditional Mayan steam lodge.  The latter has glowing reviews all over the internet, and it tweaked Mark's interest, so we signed up.  Stay tuned for a rundown on the adventure tomorrow.
